Stephen Julian, the 17-year-old of 64 Line Path Skeldon Corentyne who is on trial in the Berbice High Court before Justice Dawn Gregory-Barnes and an all male jury pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter for the November 2, 2008 murder of his one time friend, then 18-year-old Keron Caldeira, also of the same address.
Julian’s plea came yesterday. He had pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to the charge of Murder.
The matter was earlier adjourned on Tuesday to allow state appointed Attorney at law Charrandass Persaud enough time to peruse the document.
Sentencing has been deferred to December 2, when a probation report is expected to be presented. Julian is accused of murdering Caldeiria who was his friend around 22:40 hrs after they had a misunderstanding over a pair of boots.
According to prosecutor Attorney at law Dionne Mc Cammon, the two youths, who were labourers were at a birthday party where a misunderstanding developed between them over a pair of boots which Caldeira claimed was his and the accused had worn without his permission.
The youths and others then left the party and continued the argument until the youngsters were at their residence at 64 Line Path.
In the ensuing confrontation a scuffle developed and the accused went into his house, and armed himself with a knife which he used to stab Caldeira who was left sitting outside. The wounds were inflicted on the left side of the neck and his upper left shoulder.
Caldeira was picked up and rushed to the Skeldon hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The accused in the meanwhile threw away the knife and ran inside. The knife was retrieved and he was subsequently arrested and charged. A Post Mortem performed on the body of Caldeira by Dr. Vivekananda Brijmohan revealed that death was due to shock and hemorrhage and the severance of the Carotid artery.
Julian, who was 15 at the time, was first remanded to prison because of his age and has been in police custody ever since.
