– organisers laud tournament
The Betterverwagting office of Ansa McAl was a hive of activity when the various winners of the just concluded 3rd Annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet Sixteen football tournament convened to collect their respective prizes.
Representatives of both sponsorship groups were on hand to present the prizes and issue encouraging words to the winners.
Head of Customer Care (Digicel), Sherwyn Osborne handed over the first prize of $400,000 and a trophy to the management of the Western FC after they had emerged winners.
This team had defeated the Georgetown Football Club (4-1), Winners Connection (5-1) and Santos FC (4-3) on penalty kicks. The eventual winners then needled Conquerors to clinch the title.
Delivering brief comments moments after handing over the winner’s prize, Mr. Osborne reiterated Digicel’s support for local sports. He further lauded the promoters for a well organized tournament. “Congratulations and you are assured of our continued support in next year’s edition of the tournament,” said Mr. Osborne.
Public Relation’s Officer of Ansa McAl, Darshanie Yussuf expressed delight at the high quality of the tournament and also complemented the organizers for the shrewd organizing skills. She also reiterated her company’s future support for the tournament.
Meanwhile, organizer of the tournament, Sheron Abrams profusely thanked the two corporate entities for their chivalry even as she promised to deliver a more qualitative tournament next year.
Nedd Fraser received a special prize for scoring the most goals in the tournament (4) while forward player, Gavin Wilson received the Most Valuable Player prize.
Sixteen teams were involved in the tournament which got underway on October 13th and concluded on the 31st. Matches were played at the Plaisance and Buxton Community Centre Grounds.
Santos FC finished in the third place while BV Triumph sealed off the fourth place. The tournament was played on a knockout basis with the winner carting off $400,000 and a trophy while the second place finishers won $200,000 and a trophy.
The teams finishing in the 3rd and 4th places collected $100,000 and $75,000 respectively.
