Dear Editor,
I was amazed at the recent portrayal of the patch of weed in front of Freddie Kissoon’s house as proof of government attack on freedom of the press.
Looking at the patch of weed I saw something somewhat different. It looks like Kaieteur News wasted no time in getting that shot. It looks like a Kaieteur News photographer was sitting there for the day waiting for the offending piece of grass in the canal to appear.
This is my analysis of the situation: The cleaning crew was cleaning the canal for an upcoming big event at the conference centre, nearby. Wouldn’t a piece of unclean canal where the rest of the canal is completely cleaned, stickup like sore thumb attracting more attention? Just in front of Freddie’s house, no less?
How was that going to help the cleaning crew or Government, but to attract more attention, to substandard work? How would a piece of unclean canal affect Freddie anyway besides giving him and Kaieteur News some fodder for its press? It looks like he would not have been responsible for cleaning it, anyway. Was this department of the ministry so inept?
However, it does appear that the crew, starting from both ends of the canal ended up somewhere near where Freddie lives. Sure, I cannot believe that the crew or foreman did not know that Freddie lives there. I assume the canal cleaners live around the area.
Everyone who reads Kaieteur News knows something about Freddie. Could it be that these are hardworking, busy, people that do not have time to read?
I believe someone was guilty of mischief, but not attacking Freedom of the Press. No one prevented the publishing of the picture or article. Other question though? How much did Kaieteur News pay for this piece of offending canal grass in front of Freddie’s house? Think rare front-page photo Op!
It is obvious that the offending piece of grass in the canal would have been gone by the next day depending on the author of this mischief. Kaieteur News could not allow that to happen.
Two weeks after and the patch still there would definitely be a smoking gun. A day or two in the schedule of the cleaners is within their limits to get the odds and ends or mischief cleaned up. It happens all the time in thereal world. Just looking at the picture it seems that it was taken on the same day or afternoon in time for the rolling press.
The press or commentators just cannot afford to be so jumpy or picky. Stella says “thick skin”, remember? Don’t leave home without it, people in press and government! The government would not be so petty. It seems they are more accustomed to make larger blunders.
Think stelling/loading ramp on the Essequibo coast, women dying in childbirth in hospitals, speeding cramped up minibus carnage, high crime etc. Unacceptable and preventable!
One wonders what would happen or how the press and Kaieteur News react to a piece of ominous cloud appearing over Freddie’s house. Let say the cloud appears in the shape of a cup. This is the symbol of the PPP, I think. What I would definitely not tolerate though, is a cloud in the shape of a gun.
This is where I would draw the line; I will protest to the UN, Guyana Human Rights, PNC, AFC, Sharma, WPA, PPP , USA , Canada , Commonwealth and to KN of course.
