Dear Editor,
I am saddened to read of the passing of Mr. Winston Murray. In fact, since he collapsed and was hospitalized nearly two weeks ago, I became sad and worried he would not make it, thus robbing Guyanese of his talent.
The loss of Murray is a blow to decent politics in Guyana. He was widely respected among politicians on both sides of the aisle for his economic wisdom and political skills.
And not surprisingly, glowing tributes were paid to him by the President and the Opposition Leader as well as others who worked with him.
Murray was an intellectual with few comparisons in parliament. He won hearts with his brilliance of mind and his remarkable speeches and press statements. He was an elegant speaker.
In government, he was an able administrator and in opposition over the last few years, he was attacking corruption and promoting value-based politics.
He was taking a moral high ground, especially on the PNC leadership issue, enhancing his political stock in the process.
His call for good governance has ignited new expectations and excitement in the public. His was a leadership that combined vision and administrative capability which few in the country possess.
I admire the late gentleman and thought he would make a very good President if given the chance. But sadly that won’t be.
I met Murray a few times, in passing, at social events and we had brief interactions especially about the NACTA opinion polls and my commentaries in the newspapers.
He expressed admiration and showered praises for my polling and writings, describing the latter as informative and the former as capturing the mood of the electorate.
We met at a wedding just before the 2006 general elections and he told me that the findings reflected the prevailing views of voters. We met by accident again last July.
He queried whether I was conducting a poll on support for prospective Presidential aspirants.
Polls I conducted over the last two years have Murray as the leading choice for the opposition and it would have been interesting to see if the party would have selected him as its Presidential candidate.
He was the best the party has or had.
The nation will miss this gentleman.
