– suicide suspected
Guyana’s mining fraternity was in shock last night after popular gold and diamond dealer Joseph Hillaire, known as “Uncle Joe” was found dead in his Lot 57 Brickdam, Stabroek home with a gunshot wound.
Police sources said that the 72-year-old Hillaire was found in his bathroom with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest shortly after 22:00 hrs.
A firearm, said to be a .38 revolver, was found near to the body.
Kaieteur News understands that persons close to the gold and diamond magnate have told investigators that they believe he committed suicide.
Reports reaching this newspaper state that Hillarie has been suffering from cancer for some time.
He was reportedly been undergoing regular chemotheraphy overseas.
Close associates recalled that he had recently appeared to be unwell, but nevertheless expressed shock at the news.
At press time, police were still questioning the occupants of the home and the victim’s body was still to be removed from the scene.
