Switched from the East Ruimveldt Day Care Centre to the Albouystown Basketball Court, the latest action in the ‘Guinness in da Street’ small goal Football competition continued on Monday evening with four exciting matches.
Under overcast skies and bright floodlights, another large and noisy crowd which included plenty of females and children, watched as Alexander Village, East La Penetance, Broad Street ‘B’ and Queen Street Tiger Bay all register victories.
The Street Vibes (not Vybz Kartel’s new rum) was captivating all night in the Ghetto as vocal supporters offered loud advice and criticism for their teams. The playing area was demarcated with barricades decorated with Guinness banners and Banks DIH’s logs. The ‘cool down’ carts, Orange seller and ‘boil corn man’ were never short of customers and added to the atmosphere of fun and frolic.
On the Court, the action was full of energy and passion if not at all times breathtaking skill and the sponsors, coordinators (Troy Mendonca & Marlon Cole) and players should be delighted with the community support displayed.
In the final game, which produced the most goals, Queens Street Tiger Bay proved they were ‘Kings’ as they roared past West Front Road 4-3.
Dennis Calderia (4th and 8th minutes) and Rensford Coldridge (14th and 18th) produced double strikes as the Tiger Bay team won in an exciting finish after the scores were leveled at 2-all at the 10-minute half-time break.
Calderia gave Tiger Bay an early lead but two minutes later Ola Pedro equalized in the 6th minute before Calderia again found the back of the net in the 8th minute.
Michael Oie kept the scores even a minute before half time while Oie’s 2nd goal which was scored 4 minutes in the last half, had the West Front Road fans on their feet.
Because West Front Road is a ‘stone throw’ away from the Albouystown Basketball Court, the lads from ‘West’ were virtually the home team with the majority of the crowd behind them.
However, with the score 3-2 and just 6 minutes left in the contest the West Front Road supporters were silenced as Coldridge scored twice in 4 minutes to seal the deal for the Tiger Bay side.
A hat-trick from Leon Yaw, who scored in the 7th, 9th and 13th minutes, spearheaded Alexander Village to a 3-1 win against Kitty. Alexander Village now join Laing Avenue as the latest teams in the knock-out stage of the competition which will be played on a date to be announced shortly.
