It was an exhilarating and pulsating day of horseracing for the thousands that turned up at the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club one day season ending meet as the Message eked out a thigh victory over rival Night Crescendo in the Feature B Class event which predictably lived to expectations.
Most horseracing fans would usually throng the venues to witness main B or C class event and on this occasion it was the race to witness as it was as close and nerve wrecking as it could get as the two home based horses, however from differently stables, came roaring down the homestretch together as they hit the finishing line almost in tandem.
Eight animals came bursting out of the starting gates as they were sent on their way. The lead changed hands constantly with Star Tracer, Night Crescendo and On the Rock with Salt all having their taste of setting the pace. Night crescendo kept running hard and looked like it was doing enough to take the spoils until The Message started to make its move around the far turn, catching up with the front runners.
In the end it was The Message of the Elcock stable, skillfully ridden by Jamaican Jockey Andron Findley, that wanted it most as he was able to out maneuver Night Crescendo of the Crawford stable with Yap ‘Old Boy’ Drepaul on the perch to take the coveted $500,000 and the Banks DIH trophy up for grabs in the 1400 Meters event.
Face the Music of the Elcock stable came in third ahead of Miss Orientate of the Crawford stable in fourth as the two stables continued their dominance in the Major races.
Despite the inclement weather the track as usual, once again stood the test and lived up to its billing as one of the better tracks in Guyana.
The Three year old event for Guyana and West Indies Bred horses was won by Sabrina’s Princess of the Jagdeo Stable ridden by Barbados based Michael Liverpool as it out muscled old rival Peaceful of The Elcock stable with Paul Delph in control. The animal was unstoppable down the homestretch as it ran from behind to win the $350,000 and the Ivan Dipnarine trophy in the 1400M contest as Fairy Landing trudged in third.
Face the Music ridden by Findlay started things in good stead for the Elcock stable with an easy victory in the day’s first event for F class horses. After some challenges from its competitors, it was all Face the Music as it steamed down the homestretch. The win was worth $250,000 and the Bhola Trucking Service trophy over 1100M. Rounding out the money were The Gap, Mamzelle and Romantic Passion.
Irish Girl of the Lenny Singh Stable and mounted by Delph blended nicely as oozed past the competition in the Two year old 1400M event for Guyana and West Indies bred horses to take the Edward B Beharry sponsored event and the Vibert Smart Trophy. Unable to withstand the heat were Facing the Fire, Royal Salute and J.D Junior.
Pegasus Rising of the Michael Mickle stable with Findlay again on the perch rose to the occasion as it won its first victory on Guyana soil in close finish in the G class 1400M event to run away with the $200,000 winnings and the Gilgeous First Choice Pawn Shop trophy. Sir Balajee, Air Control and Prixie Fire burned down the homestretch as they rounded out the top finishers.
Dream Girl of the Chico Singh stable woke up as Mark Vassey guided it to victory in the I1 1400M race ahead of Funny Sided, Spread the News and Savion, in the Sankar Auto Works Event for the Jai’s Signs and Auto Design Trophy.
Black Beauty of the Conroy Collins stable, with Thakurdyal riding, shone on the wet and muddy day to take top honours ahead of Mona Lisa and Silver Kid in the Digicel sponsored I3, 1400M race. The win was worth $125,000.
Try Again ridden by Mahendra Sukhoo chalked up another victory as romped home in the Division 1&2 event over 1400M to carry away the $100,000 top prize and the David Ramnarine trophy. Silver Kid and Romeo failed to spark.
The Elcock stable took every thing on offer when the top individual performers were announced. The champion jockey on Show was Andron Findley riding out of the Elcock stable, while the Elcock stable ran away with the Champion stable accolade as trainer Colin Elcock was adjudge the top trainer. They all receive trophies compliments of the Trophy Stall.
In all, over 65 horses competed and close to $4M was up for grabs on the programme.
