Dear Editor,
I was enveloped with disappointment as I read the article on, ‘Burnt out resident expresses disgust with GPL”, (Kaieteur News (21-11-10).
Just a few weeks ago, readers would have read about the unfortunate incident where Mr. Orin Belfield’s place of abode on the Essequibo Coast was reduced to rubble as a result of conflagration.
Mr. Belfield is no stranger to the cricketing fraternity of this country. This is a man who has played innumerable cricket matches for the Cinderella County, against both Demerara and Berbice for a number of years.
He has even rubbed shoulders with many prominent cricketers that have emerged from this soil and gone on to play international cricket for the West Indies.
And, it is very disheartening that representatives from the cricketing fraternity have not yet come forward to offer some tangible assistance to this man in his time of need.
Initially, when I read about this incident, I thought that the cricket boards of this country would have worked collaboratively to make a contribution to this man.
There are a lot of fund raising activities which can be explored to generate some proceeds to assist with the reconstruction of Mr. Belfield’s house.
I therefore exhort the Guyana Cricket Board to intervene and take a leadership role in this humanitarian cause.
