CABOFE championships to highlight event
Boxers preparing for combat in the tenth edition of the monthly ProAm boxing card were forced to adjust their respective programmes after the organizers were forced to postpone card. Initially scheduled to get underway on Friday November 26 next, the card has been pushed back to sometime in the first week of next month.
Former Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Trevor Arno explained that the postponement is unavoidable owing to the Latin American Summit scheduled to be hosted in this country around the time of the card. Mr. Arno explained that the former Brazilian President, Lula DaSilva will be in Guyana as a special guest and will be honoured at a ceremony at the National Cultural Centre on November 26.
Mr. Arno further said that the National Telecommunications Network will be carrying that ceremony live on air and as such, could not facilitate the airing of the card.
The former secretary said that organizers are mulling either of three dates, December 3rd, 4th or 5th. Executives of the GBBC were expected to meet sometime yesterday to evaluate the situation and come up with the new date.
Addressing other concerns, Mr. Arno said that the December edition of the ProAm card would not be affected by the postponement of the November edition. He said that the final card for the year would be staged later in the month. However, these details would be released after the executives had convened and examined the prospects.
Meanwhile, Shawn Cox, the Bajan boxer that has entertained the crowd with victories over Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes and Anthony Augustin on earlier ProAm cards will once more be in action on the November edition of the card. The stocky Barbadian will match gloves with a Venezuelan opponent in what is expected to be a slugfest. The Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) title held by Cox would be at stake. Negotiations for this bout are ongoing. The other bouts on the card are Anthony Augustin versus Kurt Best; Troy Lewis up against Simeon Hardy; Quinda Rogers versus Pauline London while Edmond DeCleu will face Joel McRae
Several of these pugilists were hard at work at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), Albouystown preparing for the next engagement while another set were at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxing gym, also engaged in stiff training for the card.
Among those working out at the ALBG were Anthony Augustin and Quinda Rogers, both under the expert tutelage of Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels while Kurt Best, Eversley Brown and Pauline London are being trained by George ‘Canchi’ Oprecht.
The fighters are currently undergoing routine and skills training on the striking pads, the heavy bag and the speed ball. They are also engaged in rigorous skipping to hone their muscles as well as enhance their timings.
