Guyana ended its campaign in the 2010 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in the cellar position after the country’s mixed fortunes at home last weekend did not assist its already weak performance in the first stage of the competition in French Guiana earlier this year.
Suriname won the Games overall with 91 points while French Guiana was second with 71 points, which kept Guyana at the bottom with a total of 64 points. The Surinamese maintained their lead from the first stage with a dominant performance in Guyana.
Suriname with wins in track and field, football and swimming earlier this year in French Guiana came to Guyana with 49 points while French Guiana had 44 points and Guyana 29 points, which placed a lot of pressure on Guyana when it hosted last weekend.
Some of the factors that contributed to Guyana’s slump in the first stage included the fact that the country lost its stronghold, track and field for the first time in recent history, and did not compete in female football. Valuable points were lost as a result.
Guyana hosted male and female basketball; male and female volleyball; male and female cycling and friendly chess in the second stage of the tri-nation Games. Points were not given in chess and female cycling; the events are new introductions to the Games.
From IGG 2010, the only event Guyana won was male cycling, which was unprecedented in the history of the event. Suriname amassed 43 points; Guyana garnered 35 points and French Guiana collected 27 points from the second stage of the competition.
In the female basketball competition, the host lost 28-84 to French Guiana with Tamara Hunter and Lowquantor Gibson scoring 13 and 10 points respectively. Meina Horth had 20 points while Gaella Jean-Charles scored 16 points for the French women.
Guyana’s female basketball composition then received another drubbing 99-39 against Suriname who eventually went on to thrash French Guiana 51-39 to claim the title. Hunter and Lowquantor were the only players in double figures again with 12 and 16 points.
Guyana improved its points standing in male and female volleyball after finishing second in both events. The female team lost 3-1 to Suriname, but defeated French Guiana 3-1. The males lost to Suriname 3-1 and won 3-0 against the French Guiana team.
Suriname defeated French Guiana in both male and female volleyball contests, which ensured that the Surinamese headed into the final night of competition in Guyana Sunday night with the title already secured and awaiting mere formality.
Suriname also won the male basketball title, another accolade that Guyana has always held dear to its overall chances, for the second consecutive year. Suriname beat the Guyanese Sunday night after defeating the French Guiana team the previous night.
