Despite going down to Guatemala 3-0 last Wednesday evening in Kennesaw Atlanta, ‘Golden Jaguar’ Sean Cameron believes that the encounter was a huge boost for the Guyana flagship team.
Cameron shared those views with the Media at the post game press conference. Missing a number of their starting players for that game due to varying reasons, the Guyanese, on a cold windy night with flashes of brilliance at intervals lost the battle in their first ever full international game on USA soil.
Cameron said the game was a good booster for the team ahead of the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals which kicks off in Martinique on Friday.
“This experience against Guatemala going the final round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup was enormous for us, it did not matter if we won or lost because this exposure has bettered us. We experienced the pace and speed Guatemala plays with and you know their organization was great.”
Cameron noted that they will from time to time come up against teams that are stronger than them but they must face such teams as they develop.
“If we can get to that level where we are playing at high pace, high speed where we are all on the same page, we will definitely going to be tougher as a team. Tonight was really tough, I know it was cold but the weather was really not an issue. Their country is not a cold country either it’s just like ours; so we just have to match their intensity. We kind of beat ourselves in the first half a bit but you know, that’s the difference. We make mistakes and we get punish and now we have to learn from that. When we go into the Digicel final round we have to start punishing teams when they give us those kinds of opportunities too.”
Cameron said that the team fought and played their game and he was proud of his team mates.
“You know I’m proud of everybody, it was difficult for a lot of the guys because they have never really experienced anything like this before. It’s only a few of us who have really played against some of these guys, like J.P Rodrigues, Chris Nurse and myself but it was definitely an opportunity we have all enjoyed.”
The final stage of this year’s Digicel Caribbean Cup kicks off on Friday at the Pierre Aliker Stadium with Trinidad and Tobago facing Cuba in the opening game, hosts Martinique and Grenada will face off in the night cap in the Group H encounters.
Guyana will go into action on Saturday when they come up against Guadeloupe in the first game of the double header, the main event bringing together the other two Group I teams, Jamaica and Antigua & Barbuda at the Riviere Pilote Stadium.
