… ‘Illegal’ construction at Roraima Inn
A Bel Air Park businessman is examining his options after several complaints were made to authorities over what he described as illegal construction by his neighbours at Roraima Inn.
According to Toral ‘Johnny’ Kowlessar, owner of Pavnik Press at 26 ‘D’ Eping Avenue, he has been complaining to several Ministers of Government and to the Mayor and City Council, but all to no avail.
Currently, Kowlessar said, his major problem is that the business place controlled by businessman, Captain Gerry Gouveia, has several “illegal” sheds that were built along the fence separating the two yards.
“Whenever it rains, everything comes over into our yard,” a frustrated Kowlessar told Kaieteur News.
While the cry seems to be a frequent complaint with several illegal constructions and extensions being received on a daily basis by Kaieteur News, in the case of Kowlessar, the businessman has written several Government officials and even received replies from the offices of Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn last year.
In March last year, Gouveia was written to by the Works Minister’s office to resolve several issues but nothing has been done.
In February 2009, lawyers for Kowlessar also wrote Gouveia but the matter remained the same.
In addition to sheds hanging over Kowlessar’s yard from Roraima Inn, there was even an electric pole that was planted there illegally.
“Every time I leave and go overseas, they take the opportunity to do more construction.”
Kowlessar, who lives above his printing establishment, claimed that life has become unbearable with constant noises from the generators, which happen to be located illegally on the roadway, and from water pumps.
“They have commercial vehicles parked on the roadway at nights…I am not sure if this is legal in this area. Additionally, on a daily basis it is a problem with customers there blocking my entrance.”
According to Kowlessar, he recently again visited the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown and was told to once again write another letter. This is despite other correspondence to the City Engineer’s department.
In the meantime the waters from the rains continued to fall from Roraima Inn into Kowlessar’s yard.
Yesterday, Kaieteur News attempted to elicit a comment from Gouveia but was told that the businessman was out of the country.
Calls were made to his wife, a senior executive of Roraima Inn, but her cell phone went unanswered and calls to her office were not immediately returned.
