Fire gutted the upper flat of a two-storey house at lot 129 BB, First Street, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, yesterday morning.
The fire service responded quickly and managed to contain the blaze to the upper flat. The police later came to contain any illegality that might have occurred as is common at the scenes of fire.
At the scene of the fire it was noted that the entire upper flat was destroyed; the ceiling, and the interior walls were also destroyed as all the other items in the bedrooms.
According to residents, nobody was inside the house at the time of the fire. However, neighbours saw smoke coming out of the ceiling and raised an alarm. They then quickly rushed into action “breaking down the door and taking out the furniture and other valuables before the fire spread, but everything upstairs was destroyed.”
According to one of the two occupants of the house, Melissa Jordan, someone called her when she was at work and told her that her house was on fire, and she later rushed home to meet the house ablaze.
She said that there was no electrical equipment plugged in on the upper flat, and she could not understand what could have caused the fire.
The other occupant, Kensha Anthony disclosed at the time of the fire she was visiting her grandmother, Iris Williams, who lives at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara. Kensha occupied the middle bedroom in which the fire started in the south eastern corner. This room bore the brunt of the fire.
The grandmother, Iris Williams, disclosed that Kensha answered the phone and started crying; upon enquiring what the issue was, her granddaughter explained that the house was on fire, and they later rushed to the scene.
One neighbour who was in the house trying to extinguish the fire said that the entire upper flat was destroyed and all the valuables on the lower flat were water soaked.
Another kind hearted resident in the area invited the two fire victims to stay at her home until they could find a place to settle.
According to reports, firemen found no electrical appliances plugged in, not even the iron in the room, since the only appliance the young woman had in her room was a radio.
Statements were taken from the two occupants of the house.
The home is said to be owned by Wendy Williams who is now in the United States.
