The popular Church’s Chicken Fast food restaurant has continued its support of the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament.
Yesterday at their Camp and Middle Street location, Dawn Braithwaite, Director of Training at the business house, handed over their sponsorship to K&S Director Kashif Muhammad in the presence of Co-Director Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major.
Ms Braithwaite said that Church’s has been supportive of the tournament since setting up operation in Guyana about three years ago and pledged to continue their support of the mega event on the local football calendar. She noted that they have been pleased with the K&S Organisation’s input into local football and what they have seen and are mindful of witnessing the sport continue to improve, hence their support.
Muhammad thanked Church’s Chicken for their support, noting that they have been supportive since they came to these shores and he was pleased with their support. He noted that apart from their support of the tournament, Church’s have also provided a service to fans during games with their tasty delicacies.
Quizzed by the media on preparations for the tournament, Muhammad said systems were in place and just fine tuning of those systems are taking place at the moment. He noted that corporate support continues to come in and that is pleasing.
He stated that the organisers have met with Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee on security and other aspects of his ministry’s involvement in the tournament. They are also due to meet with President Bharrat Jagdeo shortly to finalise his customary support. The President, since he was Finance Minister, has been a big supporter of the event, both in a tangible way and with his presence.
Arrangements are also being completed for the visit of the Brazilian team, Athletico of Roraima State, to play on opening night, along with the Caribbean United side out of Barbados, who are part of the tournament.
Muhammad also informed that they are working with the Guyana Football Federation to have several of the overseas players join the Golden Jaguars for the opening match on December 12. The opening game and proceedings will be dedicated to two senior players who have given Guyana outstanding service in football. The duo, Collie Hercules, who is now on the coaching staff of the Golden Jags, and Charles Pollard, who still plays overseas, will be given special rewards in recognition of their contribution.
Meanwhile, participating teams will be given $50,000 to assist with their preparation for the tournament, Muhammad disclosed. That money is to be disbursed shortly.
