Adrian McKenzie appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with murdering his mother, 62-year-old Ethel Andries.
It is alleged that the killing took place on November, 16, last. McKenzie, who was unrepresented, stood calmly in the prisoner’s dock, as the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead, since the charge is indictable.
On the day in question, the defendant went home and reportedly awoke his cousin, while armed with a knife, and inflicted wounds on his cousin, when they had an altercation.
The now dead Ethel Andries, reportedly intervened and spoke with the defendant about his behaviour. The defendant was said to have become annoyed and arming himself with a hammer, he dealt the deceased several blows to the head.
The deceased fell to the ground, became unconscious and subsequently died as a result of the injuries she had sustained, he police said.
The defendant was told of the offence and was arrested and charged.
The defendant is to make his next court appearance on December 12 at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Jude Joseph, who was charged with simple larceny and escaping from lawful custody.
It is alleged that on November 14, last, Joseph stole one 150 Honda motorcycle, property of Caroline Joseph. It is also alleged that on November 15, last, the defendant escaped from police custody, while he was receiving medical attention.
The defendant, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charges, after the Administration Justice Act (AJA) was applied.
However, Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the accused was seen removing the motorcycle from the virtual complainant’s home.
He said that the defendant was confronted by public-spirited persons, who held him down and gave him a “beating”.
The Prosecutor said that the police were later summoned and the defendant was charged for the offence.
He said that the accused was taken to the Lethem hospital to be treated after he sustained injuries from the beating, when he jumped through a window at the hospital and made good his escape on foot.
Telford added that the defendant was later apprehended by police ranks.
Joseph was remanded to prison. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on December 7 at the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
