NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – In anticipation of heavy traffic flow and increase in road congestion for the Yuletide Season, Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force stepped up its traffic campaign from November 15th.
Officer-In-Charge of Traffic, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Adonis called on drivers to use the thoroughfares with caution and cater for all categories of road users.
This year there has been more deaths on the Berbice roadways. This figure stands at 28 in 2010 while the corresponding period last year reflects 22.
Several cases have been made against drivers for different offenses including driving under the influence and speeding.
He said the breathalyzer is here to stay and drivers should take heed.
Constant exercises are staged to target cyclists riding without lights, bells and brakes. He called on commuters not to remain silent as drivers breach the laws of the roadway.
Pedestrians are reminded not to wear dark clothing during the hours of darkness. He acknowledged that there are drivers who operate for a gain and as such have a target to meet within a stipulated time. This, along with some passengers who call for fast driving, contribute to speeding in almost all the accidents.
Commuters would see vehicles being escorted from Rosignol to Abary where the jurisdiction ends. This would also be done in other localities within the Division.
Traffic black spots or those places known to have more accidents were identified as the Number Two Public Road in East Canje especially the Canje Turn junction, public roads at Number Forty-eight, Sixty-four and Sixty-nine Villages and Springlands in East Berbice. On the western side of the Berbice River – Number Twenty-eight to thirty Public Road, the Bath Settlement Public Road and Bush Lot are deemed black spots. Here the presence of more traffic ranks would be visible.
Earlier this month, it was disclosed that Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force is short of 40 traffic ranks. Commander of Division ‘B’ Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai gave the assurance that despite the situation his team works diligently to ensure that their traffic enforcement campaign breeds success.
Since the shortage of traffic ranks cannot be dealt with overnight, those on duty now work for 12 hours instead of three. It is the policy of the Division for each police rank to function as a traffic rank.
According to the Commander, Division ‘B’ has one the most rigid traffic enforcement campaigns in the Guyana Police Force. After what has been described as the worst road fatality in Berbice on October 29th, on the Number Nineteen Highway which claimed 12 lives, more attention is paid to trucks.
