NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas and Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force is leaving no leeway for those with criminal intent. Already there is heightened vigilance by ranks in both East and West Berbice.
As the spending power of persons takes over during the next few weeks, commuters would be faced with more road blocks and cordon and search operations as police work to cripple criminal activities.
The key strategies are increased patrols in crime prone areas or hot spots and at strategic locations. There would also be more intelligence led policing. Patrols would stop, search and detain any shady characters.
Commander of Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai said networking with the Headquarters and other Sub-Divisions is important.
Special focus is now placed on shopping areas in New Amsterdam, Rose Hall town, Corriverton, Port Mourant and Rosignol. Members of the Community Policing Groups are also involved and in some cases they are assisting to provide transportation.
Beat and mobile patrols are strategically placed throughout the three Sub-Divisions in Berbice on a 24-hour basis. In the Number One Sub-Division, which is the East Bank to Borlam, Angoy’s Avenue and Canje are known as the crime locations.
Areas such as the Arch Road and Public Road in Rose Hall town, Port Mourant Market especially on Saturdays, and Springlands Police Station to Number Seventy-nine Market in the Number Two Sub-Division Corentyne now have more patrols in addition to Belvedere/Nigg, Alness and Number Sixty-six Village.
Across in West Berbice, locations such as Murphy Dam and Bennett Dam and other sections of Rosignol, Blairmont, Cotton Tree, Bath Settlement and Hopetown are also receiving more attention during this period.
With the back track operation a way of life on the Corentyne, activities would be monitored at Number Seventy-eight Village. There would also be closer collaboration with authorities in neighbouring Suriname. Marine patrols tightened their operations on the Canje and Berbice Rivers as well as the Atlantic Ocean; however, there are some restrictions on the Corentyne River.
Other areas of concentration include the Rosignol and New Amsterdam Ferry Stellings along with the Blairmont Stelling, Moleson Creek and the Berbice River Bridge. The three municipalities – New Amsterdam, Rose Hall town and Corriverton in addition to Port Mourant, Rosignol and Bush Lot would generally have more police presence.
The Commander said there is a zero tolerance stand for firecrackers. He called on the populace to let better sense prevail and desist from the use and purchase of the prohibited items. He is encouraging parents and teachers to caution their children about the danger involved with the use of firecrackers.
The Christmas policing strategy got into action on November 15th and run until January 2011. It would include all ranks.
