– defending champion Persaud in striking distance
Defending champion Avinash Persaud stayed within striking distance of the leaders after Day One of a rain hit R1 Vodka Guyana Open Golf Tournament which is being played, at the Lusignan Course.
Persaud, playing in the 0-28 Flight with a 2 handicap, closed the day with a net 71 and a gross 73 and is in a good position to retain his crown.
His brother Avinda Kishore playing in the 0-9 Flight recorded the best net score of 68 with a gross 75 after starting the day on a 7 handicap.
Other players in contention are Sookram Deosarran, who closed with a net 69 and a gross 76 from a 7 handicap, while Mike Mangal and Alfred Mentore each finished with a net 70 and a 77 and 78 gross respectively.
Mangal is playing off a 7 handicap, while Mentore
started at 8.
Imran Khan playing in the 10-18 Flight with a 14 handicap closed the day with a net 68 and an 82 gross.
He is followed by Chatterpaul Deo with a 15 handicap, net 69 and a gross 84.
George Brahim stationed in the 19-28 Flight and playing with a 24 handicap leads the group after registering a net 67 and a gross 91.
Positioned second is Mark Lashley with a 24 handicap and a net of 70 with a 94 gross.
In the Ladies Flight, Joann Deo leads with a net 75 and a gross 96 playing off a 21 handicap.
She is tracked by reigning champion Christine Sukhram with a net 78 and gross 88 off a 10 handicap.
All 18 holes were played in the day where the golfers braved torrential rain to complete the round.
Today is the scheduled final round of competition after which is the presentation ceremony.
