While Demerara, who crushed Essequibo inside 2 days in their last match in Essequibo, moved to top of the table with 16 points and the Rest team advanced to 7 after their abandoned 2nd round match at DCC on Friday, Berbice were anxious for action in their game at Blairmont with first innings points just 30 runs away with one day remaining in that contest.
After there was no play on the 2nd day on Friday in West Berbice, the entire 3rd day was washed out without a ball being bowled due to overnight rain with five-times defending champions Berbice 29 runs away from Essequibo’s paltry 127, with 8 wickets in hand.
More rain in Region 5 left the boundary areas waterlogged although the pitch which was covered, remained unaffected by the rain yesterday.
Berbice reached 98-2 with Maxi De Jonge (42) and Narsingh Deonarine (17) at the end of the opening day after Sewnarine Chattergoon and Richard Ramdeen were both dismissed with the score on 33. Leg spinner Davendra Bishoo had earlier taken 5-34 as the visitors slumped from 51 without loss.
Berbice Manager David Black said his team is very disappointed that two days have been washed since playing against Essequibo at this level almost always produces outright wins for the opposition.
“Our plan was to bat positive today (yesterday) to post a good lead and then bowl out Essequibo a second time but with the condition of the ground getting worse the more the rain falls, were are now hoping to get enough play to get first innings points tomorrow (today),” Black informed.
Essequibo are yet to register a point in the competition while Berbice, who took 6 points from their first round draw against the Rest team, will want at least first innings points if the game ends in a draw to move to 12 points.
If the final day today is again washed out without Berbice getting first innings points, they will move to 10 points but even if they get the 30 required for 6 points from this game they will have to beat Demerara outright without conceding first innings points in the final round to retain their title.
The final round of the competition is scheduled to commence on Friday with Demerara and Berbice facing off for the title at Bourda and the Rest team taking on cellar dwellers Essequibo in Essequibo.
