The Amaila Falls Access Road Development Project would necessitate the clearing of 3,368 hectares of forest, according to the Guyana Forestry Commission.
In a notice posted on its website, the Commission advised concession holders that construction of the Amaila Falls Rehabilitation and Transmission line development works project is slated to commence very shortly.
To facilitate the construction of the access road, a total area of approximately 3,368 hectares or 8,083 acres of forest in sections 6 and 7 respectively of the access road would be required to be removed.
The Commission has invited all concession holders to submit Expression of Interest for the harvesting and removal of all forest produce within the road corridor to be developed. These expressions of interest were due on October 20, 2010.
According to the document outlining the terms and conditions of Expressions of Interest, the total minimum estimated volume available for extraction is 101,040 cubic meters, with known commercial species such as greenheart, wamara, kabukali, wallaba, and mora.
Contracts can be awarded to one or more individual or parties for harvesting and removal of forest produce along various sections of the road. Awardees/concessionaires will be required to pay a deposit of $5M on signing of the contract.
The terms for extraction state that all forest produce (logs and stumps) must be tagged using GFC log tracking tags and all harvested forest produce must be recorded on a GFC removal permit and production registered completed.
In addition, all harvested forest produce must be declared at the nearest GFC Forest Station or check point.
All extraction and removal must be done within a timeframe of four weeks of the award of the contract, with the GFC advising of the date when exercise will commence.
The government has awarded Synergy Holdings the US$15.4 million project to build roads and bridges necessary for the start-up of the Amalia Falls Hydro project.
Synergy Holdings contract is for the upgrade of approximately 85 kilometers of existing roadway and the design and construction of approximately 110 kilometers of new road. The works also include building bridges across the Essequibo and Kuribrong rivers.
In addition, the contract takes into account clearing the way for the installation of a 65-kilometre transmission line.
