Dear Editor,
It seems that every day that I read the Kaieteur News, some businessman has been robbed, murdered or violated in some manner or other.
Ordinary citizens too seem to be victimized by the same atrocities. What exactly has gone wrong in Guyana? I am at a loss to understand how this once beautiful land has been able to sink so low.
“Green Land of Guyana” that we so proudly sung of as children seem to be non-existent. The streets now ‘run red’ with the blood of so many of our citizens. I know that there are those who will attempt to put forward arguments to justify why this is happening. To me, there is no justification whatsoever. The time has come for every one in Guyana to put aside his/her biases, hatred, contempt and petty grievances. No longer should ethnicity be the rule by which decisions are made. We have to cast aside this feeling of being superior to one or more other ethnic groups.
Has anyone ever stopped to think that when we were a colonial state of the British, racism was almost non-existent? Can’t we at least attempt to recapture some of that allure? After all, if we are to become a happy and prosperous nation, we must think of ourselves as Guyanese. Yes, I know that it will not be easy, but the least we can do is try.
Which brings me back to the main topic – robberies and murder, why do the businessmen and “ordinary citizens” always appear to have been violated because of the cash they supposedly had in their possession or stashed somewhere in their homes. No sane person should be walking around with those outrageous sums of money on their person or for that matter keeping it in their homes.
That is why there are banks. Everyone knows or should know by now that there is a strong possibility that you will be victimized if you fail to let common sense be your guide. Stop doing business transactions by cash. Do Guyanese businessmen not know of wire transfers or checks? Should people start following these simple security measures, I am certain that it will help reduce this wanton killing in pursuit of the almighty dollar.
