Demerara’s match abandoned, 2nd day washed out in Berbice

Leaders Demerara had to settle for 4 points in their 2nd round GCB senior 4-day cricket match against the Rest Team after the game was abandoned at the DCC ground in the city without a ball being bowled.
Originally scheduled to commence on Thursday, the GCB postponed the commencement to yesterday due to the wet condition of the Queenstown venue but torrential rain, accompanied by thunder and lightening early yesterday morning in Georgetown left DCC waterlogged forcing the entire game to be quashed leaving both teams with equal points.
Demerara, who crushed Essequibo inside 2 days in their last match in Essequibo, moved to 16 points while the Rest team advanced to 7 points. Both teams have one match to play in the four-team competition.
And at the Blairmont ground in West Berbice, the entire 2nd day was washed out without a ball being bowled with five-times defending champions Berbice 29 runs away from Essequibo’s paltry 127, with 8 wickets in hand.
Overnight rain left the North Eastern part of the ground in a soggy condition although most of West Berbice was blessed with sunny conditions yesterday. The covered pitch was unaffected by the rain and the ground was the reason Umpires Clement Brush, Zaheer Mokan and Joseph Simon decided to abandon the day’s play after their final inspection at 13:30hrs.
West Indies ‘A’ team leg spinner Davendra Bishoo took 5-34 as no Essequibo batsman reached 30 on a slow track as the visitors slumped from 51 without loss to another shabby total at this level.
Teenager Rensford Beaton then bowled with genuine pace and troubled the Berbice batsmen while Reon Thomas made a return to this level of cricket after injury. Richard Ramdeen (5) and Sewnarine Chattergoon both departed with the score on 33 but Maxi De Jonge (42) and Narsingh Deonarine (17) saw the host to the close of the first day well in sight of first innings points.
Berbice Manager David Black says his team is disappointed that their progress was interrupted by the weather which has now reduced the game to a 3-day affair. He however expressed confidence that his team will win outright.
“Our plan now is to bat positive tomorrow (today) to post a good lead and then bowl out Essequibo a second time… We have two days remaining but against a team like Essequibo that is a lot of time especially with the first part of the match almost completed. Our main worry now is the weather,” Black told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
Essequibo are yet to register a point in the competition while Berbice, who took 6 points from their first round draw against the Rest team, will want to win to move to 18 points as they face Demerara in the final round to decide the 2010 champions.
