Yesterday, nine days after being struck by a Canter truck, 60-year-old Gretha Lewis of 243 Cemetery Road, Mocha/Arcadia, succumbed to her injuries.
According to a friend of Lewis, who visited the woman at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital, it appears as if the victim was in a vegetative state since the accident.
The friend claims that a nurse told her that the woman’s skull was fractured and there was swelling in the brain which contributed to her comatose state.
Last Tuesday, Lewis, who was a Lance Corporal attached to the National Insurance Scheme and was on pre-retirement leave, was struck down by a Canter truck at Camp and Barrack Streets.
An eyewitness had related that the woman was standing at the junction when she “decided to dash across the road”. She ended up in the path of the Canter truck. The vehicle was transporting water containers at the time.
“The police take the driver and the truck into the police station, and the police stop a car that take the lady to the hospital. She look like she gon dead because she get stiff, stiff and start to froth, and she de bleeding bad too,” the eyewitness had related.
According to a Police source, the driver of the Canter truck was subsequently placed on station bail.
A post mortem is scheduled to be performed today, and based on the findings and investigations, the information would be forward to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice on whether charges should be instituted.
Lewis’s neighbours said that she lived alone and has no children; however, she has three brothers and a sister who would randomly visit her at her worksite.
