– Mother, toddler homeless
Fire, of an origin yet to be determined, completely gutted the Lot 146 Eldorado Avenue, South Ruimveldt Gardens, home of 26-year-old Malika London, around noon yesterday. The woman shared the residence with her four-year-old son, Samuel Chapman, who was reportedly at home alone when the fire started.
According to the woman she had left her son playing in the yard and went to pick some ‘bush’ which she intended to use to rid both herself and son of the flu virus. Fifteen minutes had not elapsed when a neighbour rang London’s cellular phone disclosing the tragic news. The woman related that she made a mad dash back home even as she attempted to ascertain the whereabouts of her son, who she was initially unable to locate.
Little did she know that her son had already been taken to safety by a neighbour.
The woman in a panic-stricken state then attempted to enter the premises, but was however restrained by media personality Mondale Smith, who was in the vicinity at the time.
According to Smith, he was forced to bodily remove the distraught woman to a safe area. It was he who reportedly placed the call alerting the Fire Service of the conflagration which was blazing at the time, despite inclement weather.
“She was crying and fighting to get to her son and a neighbour said that Samuel is with a neighbour, but that news was not good enough as she wanted to see him to believe,” Smith recounted.
A fire tender arrived shortly after laden with fully geared fire fighters who commenced battling the blaze even as explosions could be heard emanating from the house. They were able to contain the inferno to the single premises, alleviating the concerns of neighbouring residents.
When the flames were extinguished, London lamented that she had lost everything including some very important personal documents. The gutted house was reportedly her brother’s property.
