Three bandits last night attacked a family at Covent Garden on the East Bank of Demerara, holding occupants of a neighbouring home at bay, before escaping with jewellery and cash.
According to 40-year-old Nankishore “Ano” Seepersaud, the masked men were armed with two “long guns” and handguns and kicked open a wardrobe during the 15-minute ordeal.
The family runs a small shop.
Seepersaud said that they were sitting downstairs, at their Lot 88 First Street residence when the bandits struck. It was shortly after 20:00 hrs.
“I was facing the other way (from where the men approached) and my wife was in the other hammock facing the road when I hear she holler. Meh turn around and see this man with a long gun holding on to meh wife.”
According to Seepersaud, also at home were his 16-year-old son, Anuj, and his father.
The man said that he was ordered to lie on the ground with his son while his wife, Rukmin, was collared and taken upstairs. It was apparent that the bandits were unaware that her father-in-law was upstairs and ordered him to turn off the television.
“He asked them what is going on because he get confused.”
According to the family, the three gunmen demanded money and jewels. “I bring one straight to the wardrobe,” Rukmin said.
However, the wardrobe was locked and the gunman, becoming impatient, kicked open the door, breaking the glass. He was able to snatch over $300,000 in jewels that the family had stashed there.
The man then came downstairs and took $20,000 from the shop. In the meantime, the two bandits keeping watch on the younger Seepersaud and his teenage son, had relieved them of two cellphones and $5,000 in cash.
A neighbour, Shawn Thomas, 37, said he was sitting in his verandah, a home that was located oblique to the Seepersauds.
“I see two man jump over the fence and I seh like nobody ain’t using the gates anymore.”
Apparently, a fourth gunman who was keeping watch on the dark street, overheard. He immediately barged into the yard and ordered Thomas, an aunt and another relative downstairs.
Thomas’s sister, who lives downstairs, and who came out to investigate the noise, was also ordered to stay quiet.
The gunman relieved Thomas of a cellphone and $1,500 cash.
According to the residents, the gunmen, who appeared young and were partially dressed in camouflaged outfits, ran in the direction of the dark Well Road in making good their escape.
Nankishore Seepersaud claimed that he called 911 and was directed to contact the Providence Police Station for help.
“I ended up having to go to them because their phone ain’t working properly.”
