Demerara’s match in GT to start today
While the scheduled opening day of the Demerara/Rest Team match at the DCC ground yesterday has been postponed to today due to heavy rain in the City, Berbice Leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo took 5-34 against Essequibo at Blairmont on the first day of their 2nd round encounter of the GCB 4-day senior cricket tournament.
Prospects of a prompt 09:00hrs today at DCC look bleak and Demerara who crushed Essequibo inside two days in the first round in Essequibo would be hoping for some play in their match (which is now scheduled to conclude on Monday) to try and maintain their leading heading into their final-round match against defending champions Berbice at Bourda.
The Rest team who had Berbice holding on for a draw after conceding first innings points in their opening game at Blairmont would also be keen to get some points under their belt in the four-team competition.
In West Bank Berbice, Essequibo the only county team never to win a senior title continued their pathetic showing at this level when they were bowled out for 127 on the stroke of Tea after being asked to bat on slow track yesterday.
Even without Test pacer Brendon Bess and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul due to their West Indies ‘A’ team ‘Test’ commitments in St Vincent the Berbicans had little problems taking wickets at regular intervals despite a top score of 28 each from Jason Heyliger and Kenzo Baksh.
Bishoo, the twenty-five year-old West Indies ‘A’ limited overs player, shrugged off his surprise omission from the Regional 4-day team despite taking 71 wickets from 18 First-Class matches, by spinning webs around the hapless Essequibians in his impressive 19-overs spell.
By the close Berbice were 96-2, needing another 30 runs for first innings points with Maxi De Jonge unbeaten on 42 with 7 fours from 50 and Deonarine on 17.
Watched by a handful of spectators, Essequibo, whose only win against Berbice was at this same venue 16 years ago, were off to a good start in cool conditions as the left-handed Norman Fredericks (24) and Baksh added 51 for the first wicket.
By lunch, taken early due to rain, Essequibo were 35-0 but when play resumed after a delay off 55 minutes Esuan Crandon trapped Baksh leg before to start an all too familiar Essequibo collapse.
Jason Heyliger (24), Xavier McDonald (13) and Delon Heyliger (11) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as a fighting 23-run last wicket partnership between McDonald and National under-19 pacer Rensford Beaton (9*) temporarily held up the Berbice demolition job.
West Indies U-19 pacer Keon Joseph bowled well in a 15-over spell which yielded 2-33 while the experienced Esaun Crandon had 2-54 from 15. Deonarine, who ended the innings, had 1-2 from 1.3 overs for Berbice, champions at this level since 2005.
When Berbice began their reply in the final session Test left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon dominated a 33 run partnership with national limited overs opener Richard Ramdeen before both batsmen were sent packing on the same score.
Beaton, who bowled with lively pace and tested Ramdeen in particular with quick short balls on the placid track, had Chattergoon (23) caught at 2nd slip before former national pacer Reon Thomas, back at this level after injury, had Ramdeen leg before for five.
Deonarine, one of three players with senior West Indies experience in the Berbice side, was struck on his helmet as he ducked into a bouncer from the slimly built Beaton but along with Dejonge saw their team to the close in firm control to set up an outright victory once the rain stays away.
