– Invitation extended to families to come out
It is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the local golf calendar and who better to lend its support to such an event.
Well, brewery and beverage giants Banks DIH inked its name under the R1 Vodka brand to the Guyana Open Golf Tournament during a launching ceremony that was held in the Company’s Boardroom at Thirst Park yesterday.
Among those in attendance at the ceremony were Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Carlton Joao, PRO Troy Peters, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart, R1 Brand Manager Dwain Bristol, Lusignan Golf Club members Patrick Prashad, William Walker and a few associates from the overseas contingent.
Joao speaking at the occasion disclosed to the media that the Company has offered over $1.5 million in cash and kind to the Lusignan Club that will be hosting the event which starts on Saturday and end the following day.
He said that they expect the level of play to be high, adding that with the arrival of a large contingent from overseas to participate in the tournament, competition should be keen and closely fought.
The Executive revealed that apart from the sponsorship of the event, the Company’s aim also is to keep the sport active through its sustainability concept.
Club Captain Prashad told the media that preparations among the players have been good, adding that it has been adequate, pointing to the back-to-back tournaments where most of this weekend’s entrants were able to participate in.
“They’ve had the recent Digicel and EU competitions to fine tune their game, so I think that everyone is in fine mettle and rearing to go,” Prashad said.
Quizzed on whether there were contingencies in place should the persistent rain not abate, Prashad informed that rain has never prevented the postponement
or cancellation of the tournament in the past, but should it rain for any of the days then the winner will be decided on at least one day of competition.
“The Course drains very well and one day of sunshine should be enough to ensure that we get play,” Walker stated.
Meanwhile, entries closed on Wednesday and according to Prashad over 74 golfers will be participating in the most popular golf tournament locally.
Banks DIH is expected to be represented by its Chairman Clifford Reis, who it was disclosed has been hard at training and anticipated to be in the mix for the top spot, while Gavin Todd and Mark Lashley complete the team.
Walker thanked the sponsor for once again being on board, adding that the tournament is usually played in an atmosphere that is encouraging for families to attend, while Joao extended an invitation to everyone to come out and have a good time during the event.
