Dear Editor,
For anyone living in domestic violence, it is hard to accept being a victim. This I think is the reason why many cases of domestic violence go unreported.
Because of the emotional connection between abusers and abused, the very nature of domestic violence is exposed to us as that of betrayal and of abuse, and of misplaced trust.
With domestic violence, comes a fear so poisonous, so profound, it buries itself deep in the hearts and minds of all that fall prey to it.
This unadulterated manifestation of evil has contaminated the mentality and consciousness of this nation. It has reached its peak and still continues to mount, destroying the lives and innocence of women and children all across Guyana.
What we need in this country is a renaissance, a rebirth of our way of life and thinking, and this must be engrained into the fabric and print of our education system, as well as the social, religious and political framework of this nation.
To wage war on domestic violence, we must also engage in a spiritual revival, for God is our only hope of deliverance from this evil. What Guyana needs more than anything, is fervent, effectual, steadfast prayers.
The people of Guyana must know that it is with us that the power to change this nation rests. How many more women and children will we see gutted and doused with acid; or raped and beaten; humiliated, tormented and tortured by those entrusted with their safety, before we are angered enough to make our voices heard?
How many more bodies of murdered women must surface before Guyana realises that her children’s blood is crying out to her from the ground for justice, for an end to the violence that has consumed this land?
Let us be sure, that our silence is to these victims, the ultimate betrayal, for it is our daughters and our sisters, our mothers and our aunts and our cousins and our friends, whose blood has, and will continue to stain and stench the soil of “oh beautiful Guyana”, if we carry on unmoved and indifferent to these injustices. “All that is required for evil to triumph, is for good men and women to do nothing” (Edmund Burke).
On November, 25, there will be a concert at the Guyana Cricket Ground (GCC), a public declaration of our intolerance to this endemic problem that stalks and stifles the potential of this nation and trespasses the fundamental and inalienable rights of its people, as guaranteed by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights 1948.
Will we kick our morals and values to the curb by allowing domestic violence to continue to breathe and germinate in our country, or will we stand and defend what is ours to protect?
Will we be the voice of the voiceless? This concert is free, and all are invited to come out and support the cause of eliminating domestic violence from Guyana. The onus is on us to purge our land from the scorn, shame and filth of this evil. Please make a special effort to be a part of this historic and epic event. For November 25 will be forever remembered as the day Guyana said no to domestic violence.
