– suspect nabbed by residents on horseback
A 30-year-old Central Rupununi man ran amok on Tuesday night and beat his 62-year-old mother to death with a claw hammer, then tried to slash the throat of his 14-year-old niece.
The victim, Ethel Andries, of Sand Creek, Central Rupununi, was cornered in her home and struck repeatedly in the face and head shortly after 20:30 hrs on Tuesday. She died minutes later.
Reports out of the community said that the suspect, identified as Adrian Mc Kenzie, also attempted to kill his 14-year-old niece, who had witnessed the brutal attack on her aunt.
She was slashed on the throat with a bread-knife but managed to escape.
The alleged killer attempted to flee the community but was apprehended around 08:00 hrs yesterday by Village Councilors on horseback who had been searching for him since Tuesday. He was subsequently turned over to the Lethem Police.
The bloody hammer was recovered at the crime scene.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect had first attacked his grandfather, who is in his eighties and partially blind, before turning his wrath on his mother.
According to reports, the elderly man was sleeping when the son kicked him out of his hammock. The niece, who had witnessed the act, reportedly woke her aunt, Ethel Andries, to tell her what had transpired.
The woman began to berate her son and he reportedly responded by picking up a hammer and beating her to death.
Dropping the hammer, the suspect reportedly then attacked his niece, who jumped through a window to escape. The alleged killer, now armed with a bread-knife, pursued the niece and managed to slash her on the throat. Fortunately, the wound was superficial and the niece managed to flee and raise an alarm. Several villagers came out to search for the killer but were unable to apprehend him until the following day.
Kaieteur News understands that Ethel Andries had survived a brutal beating some four years ago at the hands of the same son. At the time, the family was residing on East Bank Demerara. It is alleged that the suspect had beaten Andries with a piece of lumber. The attack put her in hospital for weeks.
He was apprehended by police but he was reportedly placed in the Georgetown Hospital Observation Ward after Andries claimed that her son was mentally ill.
A source said that when Ethel Andries was eventually discharged from hospital, she returned home to discover that the suspect had stolen most of her belongings had been burnt part of her home.
