NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Seven persons are to appear in Magistrates’ Courts in East Berbice today as police intensify their anti-illicit drug campaign.
According to an official of the Guyana Police Force, a quantity of what were suspected to be cannabis sativa and cocaine were found during raids in known ‘drug blocks’ between Tuesday evening and yesterday morning.
About 18:30 hours on Tuesday, an anti-crime patrol operating in New Amsterdam swooped down on a home in Savannah Park. A search was conducted and 62 grammes of what is suspected to be cannabis sativa was found in the living room. The husband and his wife were taken to the Central Police Station where they remain in custody.
Hours later, around 22:45 hours, another patrol raided a home at St. John’s Street in New Amsterdam. A 44-year old woman was searched by a female police rank and the woman allegedly had two grammes of what appeared to cocaine hidden in her vagina.
The prohibited item was said to be wrapped in plastic and stuffed into a crazy glue tube. She too is being held at the Central Police Station.
Miles away at Corriverton, a team moved in on a house at Dukestown at 09:30 hours yesterday and reportedly caught a group of persons with cannabis. The owner of the home fled the scene but four persons were arrested and taken to the Springlands Police Station. The raid unearthed a quantity of what is said to be cannabis sativa.
According to the official, police in Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force has stepped up its anti-crime patrols in all Sub-Divisions especially in known trouble spots as the counter ticks down to the Yuletide Season.
Not only would the focus be on drugs and other aspects of crime but special attention would be placed on road hogs as well.
