Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett yesterday confirmed that a serving Ambassador has been tipped for the post of Ambassador to Kuwait.
Earlier this year the Minister had said that a name has been submitted when she announced that Guyana will build an Embassy there.
She said yesterday that she was not in a position to say whether the Kuwaiti Government has approved the person that was submitted for consideration and could say when confirmation could be made pointing out that that country is currently during Hajj observances.
The decision to establish an Embassy in the oil rich country follows an official state visit by Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, earlier this year to that country and a subsequent visit by the Kuwaiti premier to Guyana.
This is the first time that Guyana will have such a level of representation in that region. According to Rodrigues-Birkett the Kuwaiti government has agreed to assist and provide some resources for the establishment of the Embassy.
Rodrigues-Birkett did point out that the Ambassador will more than likely act as ambassador to some other Middle Eastern countries.
Guyana and Kuwait have signed several bilateral agreements and it is expected that with the establishment of an Embassy there will be deepened ties with the region.
She said that the move was in keeping with the policy of embracing relations with non-traditional partners.
“We are confident that the establishment of this embassy in Kuwait will further strengthen bi-laterals not only with Kuwait but from that base other countries in the Middle East.”
