– Digicel confirms support
Encouraged by the heightened activity that the sport has enjoyed recently, the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) in collaboration with Young Achievers will be hosting the visiting Suriname club champions Lyzecks for a series of matches against local teams from November 27-28.
President of the GVF Lennie Shuffler speaking with Kaieteur Sport on Tuesday disclosed that the visit is actually the initiation of plans to host an annual club tournament among the top teams from Suriname, French Guiana and Boa Vista (Brazil) in addition to maintain the vibrancy the sport is enjoying right now.
“This is the start of a programme we’ve planned to host an annual club championship, while the recent surge in activity with the staging of the Castrol Strikers and GuySuCo Training Centre tournaments have encouraged us to sustain that momentum,” Shuffler told this newspaper.
He said that the clubs have begun to show a new level of interest in helping to promote the sport with the organising of regular activities which according to him is good for the game.
Shuffler reckoned that the visit by Suriname’s top club should also act as a fillip for the sport since it will showcase most of the top players locally as well as those from the neighbouring country with Lyzecks stacked with quite a few members of the Suriname national team.
The GVF Boss indicated that most of the top clubs in the country will be participating in the Series against the visitors and games will be played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on November 27 and the following day in Berbice thereby giving volleyball fans in the respective communities and opportunity to see top quality performances.
“Digicel has already come on board in a big way and we’re very appreciative of their efforts to continue to provide the sustenance for sports generally in this nation,” Shuffler said.
Efforts to have a few more sponsors on board are ongoing and those will be announced later pending their approval.
Among the local clubs who’ve signalled their willingness to participate in the event are Castrol Strikers, Young Achievers, Rollers, GuySuCo Training Centre and Eglets.
