WINNERS ROW: Floyd Carmichael (2nd right) shows off his hardware with the other winners Orlando Michael (extreme left) and RO Michael (extreme right) Ashwant Satamand is sandwiched between the two Michaels.
The Eid Ul Adha scrabble tournament organized by the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) and staged at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands yesterday morning turned out to be highly competitive with five players amassing five points apiece with only their respective spreads separating them.
In the end it was Floyd Carmichael whose spelling prowess has separated him from the pack and allowed him to cart off the top honours when that tournament concluded at the above venue. He finished with 4 games and a positive spread of 345.
R O Michael made a refreshing return to the podium, also finishing on four points but a lower spread of 276, while the younger Michael, Orlando, sealed off the podium spots with a similar number of wins and a spread of 228. Junior Scrabble champion, Ashwant Satamand displayed remarkable resilience and despite his inability to secure a podium spot, was commended by the senior players after chalking up 4 games with a positive spread of 21.
Carmichael’s victory is even more commendable when it was noted that he started at a handicap after arriving late at the venue and missing the first game. He went on to notch up victories over Ruby Cummings (28), Julian Skeete (109), Grace Hercules (181) and Ulric Harris (28) before he stumbled with a narrow one point loss to Orlando Michael in the final game of the day.
The latter player suffered loses to Ruby Cummings (15) and Ulric Harris (77) but went on to defeat Michael Benjamin (112), R O Michael (195) and Carmichael (1).
R O Michael’s victories came at the expense of Satamand (73), Cummings (84), Julian Skeete (39) and Harris (103). He dropped games to Grace Hercules and Orlando Michael.
The players would next convene for the Scrabble Scramble tournament at a date to be announced soon.
