Dear Editor,
Road fatalities for the year 2010 have already surpassed last year’s total. Many of these accidents because of their horrific nature have aroused great concern among our country’s citizens.
Many previous attempts have been tried by the Police Traffic Department, such as (a) continual campaigns; (b) removal of painted images from the exterior of buses; (c) removal of music systems; (d) detaining of buses for prolong periods; (e) control of touts and their exploits; (f) breath analyzers; (g) enforcing existing laws; and (h) legislating new laws.
All previous initiatives have proven minutely successful or futile in saving the lives of commuters specifically and all road users generally. They were all focused on either, the buses, drivers or conductors.
However, each commuter has a responsibility to act in a manner which secures not only his or her life and livelihood, but to also ensure that the lives of others are equally secure.
To this end, I am suggesting that each commuter found in any bus or taxi that is filled beyond the vehicle’s stated capacity, or travels above the posted speed limits or sits in a vehicle of a driver which is under the influence of alcohol should be made to pay $5000 standard fine with an additional $1000 for each mile/hour travelled over the speed limit, and for every additional passenger above 15 persons, including driver and conductor. When commuters are made to pay or “feel” the squeeze in their wallets, they would be less inclined to look the other way.
In addition to the normal charges to be brought against a driver in the case of an accident, the driver’s insurance payments should be increased with every accident plus points should be added to the driver’s licence.
When the driver attains the maximum pre-set points, his/her licence should be suspended, revoked or banned.
