…as Ministry of Education looks to boost results
A new interactive online website has been created as the Ministry of Education looks to boost results in the secondary school system, particularly the subjects of Mathematics and English.
The programme, called Connecting Classrooms, is being tested by an initial 20 schools.
The project is an initiative of the Ministry of Education with part funding by the United Nations Children’s Fund.
The start-up of Connecting Classrooms was announced by Chief Planning Officer, Evelyn Hamilton, when she appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Social Services last Friday.
Connecting Classrooms deals with providing a collaborative teaching/learning experience at the Secondary level through the means of a web portal.
The aim of the initiative is to enhance the education level of students as well as developing the Information Technology skills of teachers.
The additional resources on the website would help to enrich the curriculum, build skills and motivation.
All students need to do is register on the site and they can then visit the site as often as they wish and partake in various forums. The Ministry of Education updates the website with new material every week.
The site allows teachers to share their opinions on the way different subjects could be presented and it also allows students to ask questions of their teachers.
Also, students from the different schools are able to ask their colleagues their understanding of various subjects.
The goal is to give students a second chance at understanding subjects they might not have been too clear about.
If a student is absent from school, he or she would not be left behind as the classroom work would be available online.
A group of special teachers is responsible for preparing the lessons which are posted online.
