Two of the seven miners are now dead after a tree fell on the pit in which they were working at Upper Barama. The dead were listed as 32-year-old Anand Pooran of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara and Michael Allen a/k Mikey Bug of Grant Adventure, Lower Pomeroon.
Those who sustained injuries are Dason Williams,18, of Lower Pomeroon; Easton Boyce, 18, of Charity Back Street; Shawn Dutchin, of Grant Adventure Lower Pomeroon, Clifford Joseph, and Steve Dilchand.
Easton Boyce sustained both back and head injuries.
The dead were flown out from Barama yesterday and taken to the Suddie Hospital mortuary, while most of the injured were transported in a chartered boat and are now patients at the Suddie Public Hospital.
Shawn Dutchin was later transported to Georgetown Public Hospital where he is now a patient.
It was reported that around 14:00 hours on Monday, at Bamboo Landing, Upper Barama, a tree fell on the pit in which the miners were working.
It was also reported that at the time the workers were clearing the area with an excavator operated by Shawad Barakat also of Charity, when an uprooted tree fell on the men killing one instantly.
According to reports, Michael Allen and Shawn Dutchin are brothers who worked in the interior for a period. According to the father of the dead Michael and injured Shawn, Michael went to work in the backdam about five weeks ago.
