Marvin Williams, who was previously sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for the possession of narcotics, was yesterday sentenced to an additional two years, after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of attempting to escape from lawful custody.
On November 4, Williams, who is an inmate at the Camp Street Prison, Georgetown, attempted to escape while being returned to the facility following a court appearance.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and told the Magistrate that he was frustrated and confused after he had received his first sentencing. Williams apologised for his action and begged the magistrate to be lenient in sentencing him.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Winston John, who was charged with simple larceny.
It is alleged that on December 20, 2009, he stole one cell phone valued $100,000 – property of Codana Ramalho.
The defendant, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He told the court that he had no knowledge of the stolen cell phone.
According to John, while he was in police custody, the virtual complainant informed the police that she was unable
to identify a suspect. He contended that the woman said that she only wanted to be repaid for the phone.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford had no objections to bail, but informed the court that the defendant was previously arrested for the same offence. He said that when the man made his first court appearance, he was granted bail, but he has never returned to the court since that day. Telford added that an arrest warrant was issued for the accused, hence he was re-arrested and charge of the same offence.
The Magistrate granted bail to the tune of $100,000 and ordered John to make his next court appearance on November 29.
