By Jenelle Carter and Latoya Giles
A brazen daylight robbery at Lot 18 Second Street, Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara, has left a businessman dead, one of his attackers killed, one in police custody, another seriously wounded and a Rural Constable (RC) nursing a gunshot wound at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Around 11:00 hours yesterday, 64 year-old Dennis Ramah was pronounced dead at GPHC while receiving medical attention. The businessman’s son, Nigel Ramah told Kaieteur News that around 09:30 hours yesterday, a man entered, Ramah’s business place, L&D Shopping Centre, posing as a customer. He said that the man ordered a “chip” from an employee and as she was attending to the “customer”, four other men entered the supermarket.
Nigel Ramah said that two of the men then held the employees at gunpoint and ordered them to lay face down on the floor, while the other three went upstairs. While in the businessman’s home, Ramah said that his mother, Lorine Ramah was held at gunpoint and was ordered by one of the gunmen to hand over cash and jewellery.
He said that his mother directed the men to a cupboard in the kitchen.
“Meh mother tell dem de money in de cupboard in de kitchen, fuh try fuh distract them,” the son explained.
It was while in the kitchen, that his father entered the house with a cutlass and attacked one of the gunmen from behind. He stated that the gunman was chopped on his back. It was then that one of the man’s accomplices shot his father several times in the chest.
Nigel Ramah recounted that a car was parked at the head of the street, but only three of the six men managed to make it into the vehicle.
He said that the other men made their escape by foot, but were confronted by a Rural Constable, Davenand Shaymaraj, who shot one of the men, but the RC was also shot by one of the gunmen during their escape bid.
Ramah added that no valuables were taken from the business place.
Shaymaraj, 51, who is a member of the Community Policing Group, and who lives a short distance away, was heading to the robbery scene to see what assistance he could have given to the victims when he was shot.
According to Shymaraj, after hearing about the robbery he uplifted a shotgun and headed to the area. However on his way he noticed two men running out of the street so he exited his vehicle with the gun.
By that time the two men who were carrying guns opened fire on Shymaraj, who returned fire. Shymarak was shot but he managed to hit one of the gunmen who was subsequently apprehended by police. The injured Shaymaraj was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated. At the hospital, his daughter Tricia told this newspaper that she was at work when she received the message. Kaieteur News understands that Shymaraj has since been discharged and was taken to a private institution.
Present at the hospital yesterday was Police Superintendent John Sauers. In a brief interview with the media, Sauers said that the police’s response time was very commendable. He said that a patrol was in the area when they received the information and quickly rushed to the area.
This newspaper was told that another bandit was fatally shot during a confrontation with the police while one was caught and is presently in police custody unharmed.
Up to press time yesterday one of the gunmen was still being treated at the Georgetown Public hospital under police guard. He has since given his name to the police as Victor Bobb, 26 years of “B” Field, Pattensen, East Coast Demerara. Kaieteur News understands that the other suspect in police custody has been identified as Quincy Arthur.
Police sources yesterday said that he is admitting to numerous robberies that the gang committed on the East Coast of Demerara.
Meanwhile, according to police report, a passerby was also rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound after it was suspected that he was hit by a stray bullet. That man has been identified as 76-year-old Daniel Muller.
Several spent shells were recovered at the scene by the police as investigations continue.
