Arrest warrant for Benschop withdrawn

The case against political and social activist Mark Benschop was called again yesterday before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond, and an arrest warrant which was issued for his arrest was withdrawn, as he appeared in court on his own volition.
Benschop is charged with allegedly driving motor pick-up GLL3101 without a licence being in force at the time.
Attorney Christopher Ram, who represented Benschop, gave details why his client was absent from the prior hearing.
Ram explained that he had indicated to the court on the last hearing in October, before now suspended Magistrate Chandra Sohan, that his client was scheduled to make an overseas trip and expected to be out of the country until late December. Ram said he had requested that the matter be called at a later date. He suggested that it appeared that his intentions were not made known to the magistrate Chandan-Edmond.
Ram said that Benschop returned yesterday and had immediately appeared in court.
The magistrate decided to withdraw the arrest warrant because the court realised that Benschop’s explanation was not noted on the case docket. Benschop had been told to return to court on November 3 but when he failed to do so an arrest warrant was issued.
The prosecution did not offer any objection.
The magistrate then adjourned the matter until November 30, but not before warning Benschop about the consequences of a recurrence of his absence.
