Neesa Gopal saga continues… Teachers challenge new letters

The teachers who were sanctioned by the Ministry of Education in relation to the manner they dealt with the now dead Neesa Gopaul, said that they are not satisfied with the letter that followed their sanction letter.
This newspaper was told that the three teachers received their letters on November 9 last and the content remains the same except for three new sentences.
According to a reliable source, the teachers have since indicated that they are not pleased with the letters, hence their letters have since been forwarded to the Guyana Teachers’ Union for further intervention.
President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Colin Bynoe, in an invited comment, said that the matter has been brought to the Union’s attention and that it is being investigated. According to Bynoe, the teachers did raise their concern about the content of the second letter they received and the union, too, is not satisfied.
Bynoe said that the content of the second letter clearly does not replicate the agreement reached when both the Union and the Ministry met recently.
The GTU president said that the content of the letter does not state that the sanctions have been lifted as was agreed to.
“We were informed that the Minister of Education is out of the country but we will be addressing the matter when he gets back.”
The Union was involved in the matter after it was noted that the teachers were being debarred from promotion and in some cases demoted for their involvement in the Neesa Gopaul incident. The union had stated that the investigation carried out by the Ministry was not done properly since the Union was not involved.
Following the Union’s intervention and their announcement of pulling out of the recently concluded National School’s Championship, the ministry announced the sanctions will be lifted.
