– AAG won’t fund D’Andrade to Suriname
Guyana’s Kelvin Johnson, who opted out of the South American 10km Road Race last month, outclassed two athletes that competed in the race yesterday to win the San Fernando 5km Road Race in Trinidad and Tobago.
Johnson, who is based in the Twin Island Republic, ran 15:30 to beat Trinidad’s Curtis Cox and fellow Guyanese Lionel D’Andrade respectively. Cox and D’Andrade ran 15:36 and 15:37 in an intense battle for second and third places respectively.
Both Cox and D’Andrade have finished among the top ten in International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) 10km race in Guyana a few weeks ago. Johnson had opted out of the race to compete at the University of the West Indies Half Marathon.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport from Trinidad yesterday, D’Andrade said that the race was good speed work for his marathon assignment in Suriname on Saturday. The athlete was of the view that he is much better over the longer distance.
D’Andrade indicated that he has been communicating with the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) relative to his participation in Suriname. President of the AAG, Colin Boyce confirmed yesterday that he has been communicating with D’Andrade.
Boyce said that because the Suriname athletics body is not hosting the marathon in Suriname it would be inappropriate for the AAG to select and fund a national team for the event. He said that the marathon is an independent and not a national venture.
“Lionel called me, but I regret to inform that we cannot, at this time, afford to select a national team to compete at an event that is not hosted by the Suriname athletics body.
Paying his fare from Trinidad to Suriname and back is too much,” Boyce said.
The AAG President reiterated his previous position that the selection process for athletes will be seriously reviewed for the new athletics season. Boyce believes that there are too many factors undermining Guyana sending its best representative teams.
