Guyanese soldiers who died during World Wars One and Two were yesterday morning remembered at the Cenotaph, a monument dedicated to them. The Cenotaph is located in Central Georgetown near the Bank of Guyana.
Wreaths were laid by members of the Diplomatic Corps, Head of State Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Commodore Gary Best, Police Commissioner, Henry Greene, Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, representatives of the Guyana Legion and some members of the public, including trade unionists.
It was a serene atmosphere which was made even more somber by the music provided by the Guyana Police Force band.
Following the arrival of the President the Last Post was sounded and two minutes of silence was observed between sounding of the first and second gun after which the Reveille was sounded.
Following the laying of the wreaths Jagdeo told the gathering that they have met to “remember all those gallant men and women who gave their lives in two world wars…We are forever indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice in the cause of peace and freedom.”
He added, “We also recall with gratitude those who, through the years, have made similar personal sacrifices in the continuing struggle for human dignity, social justice and freedom from all forms of oppression, wherever these exist…Their example strengthens our resolve to maintain our efforts for a world at peace with justice and prosperity for all peoples.”
The President said that on the solemn occasion the citizens of the Republic of Guyana must rededicate “ourselves to the search for peace everywhere and renew our commitment to the development and well-being of our beloved country.”
Following the address there were prayers by representatives of the three major religions and the traditional route march at which President Jagdeo, who is also the Chief of Staff, took the salute by members of the army, police, veterans, nurses brigade and scouts and girls guides among others.
