Exciting doubles play punctuated Saturday’s play at the Pegasus Open as the top two seeds in the Men’s Doubles were in action. Play went past the midnight hour as Andy Goveia /Ezra Sue-Ho upset the number two seeds Jeremy Miller/Jason Andrews in one of the best matches of the tournament.
Both teams were evenly matched and it was a battle of nerves as the game went to three sets . The first set was even up to 4-4 before Andrews was broken whilst serving down 4-5. In the second set Goveia/Sue-Ho raced off to a 5-2 lead but Miller/Andrews refused to give up and with the the urging of the large crowding witnessing the match were able to claw back from down match point and take the set 7-5.
The third set followed a similar trend but this time Miller and Andrews were unable to repeat their second set heroics and after coming back from 1-4 and tying the game at 5-5 lost the match when Andrews’ serve was broken.
The 6-4 5-7 5-5 victory was a well deserved one for Goveia/Sue-Ho and their matchup with top seeds Squires/Lowden is eagerly anticipated.
Phillip Squires/ Godfrey Lowden earlier had their own battle in the highly competitive Doubles draw as they struggled to defeat Sandeep Chand/Andre Lopes 7-5 6-4. Despite racing off to a 4-1 first set lead, the top seeds were made to battle as the game was tied up at 4-4 before they took the set 7-5. Chand/Lopes then took a 3-1 second set lead before Squires/Lowden evened it up and eventually took the match 6-4 when they broke serve at 5-4.
In the Men’s Singles, Leyland Leacock struggled to put away junior Seanden David-Longe after easily taking the first set 6-1.The match ended 7-5 in the second set. He will next face the second seed Jeremy Miller in the semi-finals.
In the Men’s 35 second seed Gilbert Barckoy got past Berbician Mario Niamatali 6-2 6-4 while in the Men’s 45 Doubles Victor Da Silva/Harry Panday defeated the Sri Lankan/Japanese pairing of DL Mendis/Sakae Yamada.
