It is not often that Berbicians get a special treat that takes away that ‘quietness’ of living in the countryside. Under the theme “Transforming for Continued Service”, the Guyana Defence Force is continuing its month-long activities to mark its 45th anniversary.
“This definitely looks bigger than the one I have at home”, this child must be thinking as he touches one of many anti aircraft guns stationed around the GDFS battleship Essequibo.
Last weekend, Berbicians were thrilled by at least two sightseeing events. The first was the parachuting of the GDF troops from an airplane in New Amsterdam. Hundreds of Berbicians, converged on the New Amsterdam Basketball court to witness the spectacular feat.
The eye-catching event was also visible from all corners as residents also were able to watch from their homes. Meanwhile, on the waters of the Berbice River stood silently a vessel that is equipped to defend Guyana from the enemy on the seas. The GDFS Essequibo arrived at port New Amsterdam on Saturday and was moored there.
It was officially open for visiting from 13:00 hours to 16:00 hours on Saturday and from 8:00 hours to noon, yesterday. However, due to the huge response by the public, the tours went beyond midday on Sunday.
Military personnel were on call to take visitors in groups of 12 on a 30- minute tour around the majestic flagship of the Guyana navy. The ship was purchased from the United Kingdom in August, 2001.
It is equipped with a weather radar, several security points, a communication system, radios, sleeping quarters, classroom, mess halls, kitchen, laundry room, GPS system, several compasses which are located around the ship, special knots, special guns which are stationed at strategic points around the vessel, life- jackets and life- boats with emergency food supplies.
According to an officer on board the ship, Ellard Dickinson, the last mission the ship was involved in was the emergency aid that was given Grenada a few years ago when that country experienced a natural disaster of epic proportions.
