– Power outage forces abandonment of second semi-final
A power outage that affected almost the entire City forced the abandonment of the feature game of the scheduled semi-finals double-header in this year’s NaMilCo Football Festival, at the Tucville ground on Friday.
The match between Santos and hosts Fruta Conquerors had to be rescheduled after a power outage in the City occurred shortly after the resumption of play in the second period with the scores at nil-all.
According to the Organisers, the game will now be played this Wednesday at the same venue with the winner set to meet Alpha United in the final on Sunday.
In the opening encounter, Alpha United through goals from Shevane Seaforth (43rd), Dwain Jacobs (70th) and a penalty from Shawn Bishop (84th) erased any ambitions Sunburst Camptown harboured of reaching the final.
Reshawn Sandiford’s 3rd minute penalty had given Camptown the lead in the first half after Alpha’s defender Selwyn Isaacs was booked for dangerous play on Nigel Codrington.
Sandiford easily buried the ensuing spot kick.
Seaforth then got the equaliser for Alpha two minutes before the break as the two teams went to lemon time squared at 1-1.
On the resumption, both teams looked potent in attack and solid in defence and it seemed as though extra time or even penalty kicks was the order of the day.
However, Jacobs cracked open the defence and smashed a powerful shot past the Camptown keeper.
The goal appeared to have ruffled the previously airtight defence of Camptown and suddenly more chances were created as Alpha attacked with menace.
They stretched their advantage even further when keeper Maurice Prince, clearly upset by he backline’s vulnerability inexplicably held on to the foot of the nippy Jacobs inside the penalty area and was called for a foul by referee Wayne Joseph.
Bishop hammered a left-foot shot into the far corner, giving Prince no chance of stopping.
They now await the winner of the second semi-final.
