Lennox Allen survived a first round knockdown to score a sensational knockout over Nick Brinson when the two fighters clashed for the New York State Super Middleweight title Saturday evening last at the Albany, New York’s Washington Ave. Armory.
Both fighters entered the ring with unbeaten records and the chant was ‘somebody’s ‘O’ has gotta go.’ Reports from fightnews.com state that both fighters were engaged in the feeling out process for most of the first round.
Brinson then unloaded a straight right to the face of Allen depositing him on the canvas for the mandatory eight count. The report further states that the round seemed to be inordinately lengthy where Allen floundered around the ring in survival mode.
Allen seemed to have recovered in the second round while Brinson seemed to have exhausted his energy in his attempt to put away the Guyanese contender.
“Brinson had less snap on his punches in the third, and was floundering around the ring in the fourth, as Allen seemed to regain his steam,” fightnews.com reported. Allen also sustained a terrible cut over his right eye while a mouse was developing below the very eye.
Apparently, this buoyed Brinson’s resolve and he decided to intensify his efforts.
In his enthusiasm he breeched the rules and the referee Ken Zimmer warned him for using his head while in a clinch. It proved to be Brinson’s final hurrah as he wilted shortly afterwards while Allen increased the pressure in the seventh. The Guyanese pugilist then unleashed a final barrage that had Brinson out on his feet after taking a sickening volley of blows to the head.
Referee Zimmer had seen enough and waved off the bout in 2:59 secs of that round. With the win, Allen retains his New York State Super Middleweight title and moves to 13-0-1, 8 KOs, while Brinson tastes a bitter first defeat, ending on 7-1-1, 5 KOs.
