Defending Men’s Singles champion Phillip Squires cruised past Sandeep Chand 6-2, 6-2 to enter the semi-finals of the 2010 Pegasus Open Tennis Championships which continued on Friday, at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
Top seed Squires threatened to make the game another rout racing off to a 4-0 with some excellent serves, before Chand found some momentum.
The first set ended 6-2 and after tied at 2-2 in the second, Squires broke serve and then was able to save break points on his own serve to go ahead 4-2.
He then served out the set whilst having to stave off another break point.
Squires will next face top Junior Gavin Lewis and is rounding into top form after being away from the game.
In Men’s Doubles action, Andy Goveia/ Ezra Sue-Ho edged past Gilbert Barckoy / Leyland Leacock 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In more Men’s Doubles play, Jeremy Miller / Jason Andrews trounced Gairy Myers /Adam Alves 6-1, 6-0.
In Men’s 45 Singles action, Harry Panday eliminated Yamada Sakae 6-2, 6-4.
Men’s #2 seeded Jeremy Miller then disposed of US-based Andy Goveia 6-2, 7-5
The battle of two of the top players in Guyana saw Miller utilise his patience to perfection, while his big forehands were too powerful for Goveia.
Miller simply used his tactical superiority to defeat the high energy Goveia in straight sets.
He simply allowed the shot making Goveia to make mistakes and took the first set comfortably.
The set, however, included some big serves from Goveia and a stunning diving backhand passing shot.
He found his groove in the second set and raced to a 5-2 lead and then inexplicably dropped his serve when serving for the set.
The rest was history as Miller began attacking and took the next 5 games and the match.
In more Men’s Singles play, Gavin Lewis def. Hamilton Babb 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.Babb has created waves in the tournament with his consistent play and ability to retrieve the ball and wait for the opponents to self destruct. His play is reminiscent of stalwart Rudy Grant who is now off the tennis scene. The match was a marathon one lasting over two hours and Lewis had to dig into his reserves to eventually pull off the win.
In the first set, Lewis was up 4-2 before Babb won the next 4 games to take the set 6-4. Babb was set to take to the game when he was up 5-3 but Lewis came back strongly to win set 7-5 and force a decider.
The final set saw Babb again going ahead and Lewis had to come back from 3-1 and eventually took the set and match at 6-4.
In Men’s 35 & Over Doubles, the combination of Don Singh/ Sanjeev Datadin defeated Gilbert Barckoy / Julian Mc Ewan by walkover.
