Rain, the questionable run out of Sewnarine Chattergoon when he appeared set on 42 and good bowling from off-spinners Krisendat Ramoo and Dion Ferrier combined to condemn the GCB senior 4-day cricket match between Berbice and the Rest team to a draw at Blairmount yesterday.
Ferrier had 2-43 and Ramoo 2-43 as Berbice set 234 to win (from a minimum of 21 overs plus the mandatory 15 in the last hour) reached 139-6 when both captains agreed to call off the game with 7 overs remaining.
Delbert Hicks had earlier ensured that Berbice had to chase a 200-plus total by hitting six fours and a six in his 78-ball and 105-minute 55 to follow up his first innings 40 for the Rest team
Scores: Berbice 392 & 139-6, Rest team 202 & 423.
Shemroy Barrington began the day on 152 while Hicks was with him on 11 when the Rest team resumed on their overnight 322-5.
Barrington failed to add much to his 3rd century at this level when he lofted a catch to long-off as left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul struck at 333-6.
Another sprinkling of spectators watched in sunny conditions as Hicks lobbed a caught and bowled offering to Test pacer Brendon Bess to leave the score on 379-7.
Kellon Carmichael (16) was then removed ‘hit wicket’ to off-spinner Steven Latcha at 402-8 but the 9th wicket pair of Ramoo (21*) and 17-year-old debutant left-arm spinner Raj Nanan (1) survived to Lunch in overcast conditions to see their team to 409-9, enjoying a lead of 219 runs.
A heavy shower during the interval delayed the resumption after lunch since no covers were used to protect the bowler’s run-up although extra covers were available at the ground but not used.
With an hour and 50 minutes lost due to rain, play resumed at 14:00hrs and Ramoo (21) and Nanan (8) were quickly dismissed as Berbice wrapped up the Rest team’s innings in 18 minutes after the resumption.
Set 234 to win from 21 overs plus the mandatory 15, Berbice quickly lost Richard Ramdeen (3) when he pulled Kayron Fraser to long-leg at 11-1.
Fraser, a former national under-19 pacer, should have had another wicket when Chattergoon was dropped by Nanan on 6 at deep square-leg.
The left-handed Chattergoon took the attack to the new ball pair and top edged a boundary off Fraser before pulling Kellon Carmichael for six as the home team, mindful that Demerara had crushed the woeful Essequibians in 2 days, chased down the victory target.
Chattergoon and Deonarine, both with Test experience, brought up the 50 in just 6.2 overs in bright sunshine as Chattergoon was especially severe on Fraser with some vintage cover drives and disdainful pulls.
From 54-1 at Tea with Chattergoon on 38 and Deonarine on 9, the host needed another 182 from a possible 29 overs and with the light also a consideration a riveting final session was anticipated.
With the score on 61, Chattergoon, who hit 5 fours and a six in his entertaining 29-ball 42, seemed unfortunate to be adjudged run out while Deonarine (16) was taken at deep square-leg off Ferrier to leave the score on 76-3.
Royston Crandon was joined by Anthony Bramble but once the Skipper who made 29 from 30 balls clipped Ramoo to short mid-wicket after being dropped off the previous ball and Bramble (7) was removed by Ferrier in the next over, Berbice had lost 2 wickets for 4 runs and at 105-5 were falling behind the required run rate.
With Assad Fudadin and Devon Clements at the crease and 112 needed from the final 15 overs, the prospects of the Rest saving the match was getting better and when Fudadin (24) lofted Ramoo to long-on at 136-6 suddenly it was Berbice who were batting for survival.
Lackadaisical fielding and ultra defensive captaincy from Gajanand Singh with Berbice no longer interested in hunting down the victory target and six wickets down let the home team off the hook in fading light.
Clements and Permaul batted to the close as Berbice collected 6 points and the Rest team 3, going into the next round which starts on Thursday.
The Rest team plays Demerara (12 points) at Bourda in their next match while Berbice take on Essequibo (0 points) at Blairmount in their next game.
