– Upper Demerara, Corentyne won battles
North Georgetown, District 11, won the ultimate war for the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships while Upper Demerara and Corentyne won the individual team battles at the National Stadium, Friday night.
North Georgetown won the Swimming and Teachers’ competitions, placed fourth in the cycling and third in the track and field to win the overall Schools’ Nationals Championships with a total of 69 points from the four competitions of the Championships.
Upper Demerara was second with 66 points after winning the track and field contest, placing second in the cycling and second in the swimming, but placed a disappointing sixth in the teachers’ competition, which is why they lost the overall title.
Corentyne finished third overall with 57 points after winning cycling, placing second in track and field, third in the teachers’ competition and an unsatisfactory 13th in the swimming competition that was held on Tuesday at the Castellani Pool.
South Georgetown came fourth with 53 points overall after placing fourth in track and field, fourth in the teachers’ competition, fifth in swimming and sixth in the cycling competition of the 50th National Schools’ competition over four days last week.
Bartica rounded off the top five with 50 points after finishing second in the teachers’ competition
and third in the swimming competition. Bartica finished seventh in the cycling event and eleventh in track and field to occupy the fifth position overall.
East Georgetown was sixth 49 points with a fourth place finish in swimming, a fifth place finish in the teachers’ contest, a fifth place finish in track and field and a ninth place finish in cycling to continue the ranking of teams in the Championships.
New Amsterdam finished seventh with 40 points overall with third in the cycling, eighth in the teachers’ competition, 10th in track and field and eleventh in swimming. West Demerara was in the eight position overall with 39 points.
East Coast Demerara brought ninth overall with 36 points while West Coast Berbice rounded off the top ten teams with 31 points; Essequibo Coast and Rupununi tied for eleventh with 30 points apiece while North West was thirteenth with 23 ½ points.
East Bank Demerara finished fourteenth with 20 points while Potaro and Essequibo Islands were the 14th team with 17-points. Sixteen teams, Districts one to 16, competed for the coveted annual Schools’ Nationals title in three disciplines, including teachers.
