The organising duo of Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major last Friday met with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr. Frank Anthony at his Main Street Office to discuss details in relation to the ministry’s involvement in this year’s event.
Kashif Muhammad later told Kaieteur Sport that those discussions were fruitful and they are encouraged by the support of the ministry.
He pointed out that since Dr. Anthony has been in the post, he has been extremely helpful to them and the event, just like his predecessors Anthony Xavier and Gail Teixeira. Kashif disclosed that they have invited Dr. Anthony to open the tournament and be apart of the programme at various stages including the final. With the involvement of two overseas teams in the tournament and the visit of a Brazilian side to play in the opening on December 12, the organising duo ensured that due protocol was followed in seeking exemptions among other necessary ‘favours’ from government for a smooth and successful staging of the event.
Kashif noted that government’s support has been instrumental in bringing the tournament to what it is today. He informed that this was only the ministry of sports’ contribution that was being discussed, however His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo has been a big supporter and is still to disclose his customary involvement.
The organiser informed that since President Jagdeo was Finance Minister he has lent immense support and now in his role as leader of the country, he continues to ensure the event grows through his tangible help. Discussions with the President are expected to be held shortly.
